Blog #5: Is Social Media Safe

The overall message of this video is that social media is harmful to a certain extent (you will wish you watched this before you started using social media | the twisted truth). The video also talking about, how social media is twisted in how the creators of social media designed these social media platforms, because in the title of the video it mentioned “the twisted truth”. Also the cover of the video shows a photo of the creator of Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg), so the video will touch on how Facebook and other social media platforms are affecting our lives.

In this video there are some quotes that might stand out to you when you watch it, here are three possible quotes that could pop out to you. The first quote might be a quote from Steven Kotler, he said “when you look at your phone and maybe there’s a text there and maybe there’s not and you don’t know when it shows up that high you get that’s dopamine”, when you see this quote it may make you think about how much time you spend on social media. Another quote that could stood out to you is from Chamath Palihapitiya, he said “if you feed the beast that beast will destroy you”. You might think it was really cool and interesting that he used the word “beast” as a reference to how social media is affecting the people who us it. Chamath also personally rarely ever uses social media, because he knows how it affects our social relationships so he wants no part of it. There might be another quote that might stand out to you is from Chamath Palihapitiya, he said “fake brittle popularity that’s shot-term and that leaves you even more and admit it vacant and empty before you did it”, when hearing this quote you may notice that he used the words vacant and empty (vacant is provocative synonym for empty) to help describe the way that social media makes us feel.

I think that the main idea of this video is how distracting social media is to us. Also when we us social media it keeps us from talking to people one on one, that can start problems, because talking over text can sometimes be taken the wrong way. Some people are more prone to us social media as a way to vent their frustration that they probably would not be able to do in person, that is how cyberbullying can starts.

In this video there were some quotes that stood out to me, one of the quotes was from Steven Kotler, he said “when you look at your phone and maybe there’s a text there and maybe there’s not and you don’t know when it shows up that high you get that’s dopamine”, when I hired this quote I thought that just something as small as just getting a notification can addicting. Another quote that I here in the video was from Chamath Palihapitiya, he said “if you feed the beast that beast will destroy you”, I thought this quote did a good job of explaining how social media destroys your social life. There was one more quote that stood out to me it was from Chamath Palihapitiya, he also said “fake brittle popularity that’s shot-term and that leaves you even more and admit it vacant and empty before you did it”, this happens to me often, and for me it is not just social media that this happens.
