McGuire vs. Brooks

According to the article Building Attention Span by David Brooks.  Fluid intelligence is referring to the way we live in the life of social media, gaming and really use our short term memory.  Not really having to deal with people or real situations.  It allows the person to loose themselves and not face reality.  Like a make believe world, looking at and watching others.  Crystallized intelligence is the knowledge that you gather as life goes on.  Ideas stick with you longer.  It is more of the long term memory, that get larger over time.  It is more useful in everyday life.  It is more concrete and full of experiences.

Saundra McGuire’s ideas on studying and learning are that, studying is cramming for a test and gathering knowledge for a specific reason.  Studying is more of a short term situation.  Saundra states “Studying is focusing on the ‘whats,’ but learning is focusing on the ‘hows,’ ‘whys,’ and ‘what ifs.’” Studying is just to gather information to fill in the blanks or check the correct boxes. Learning is the process of really understanding what is going on and it is more long term and will stick with you.

David Brook’s ideas on fluid intelligence vs. crystallized is very similar to Saundra McGuire’s ideas on studying and learning. Because fluid intelligence and studying are both short term and are not used for everyday, they are both useful for the time that it is needed only for a certain time.  Like a game, quiz or test. Crystallized intelligence and learning are more alike because they are both long term are more helpful than fluid intelligence and studying.  Because it lets you retain what you have learned for longer time than you would have. Crystallized intelligence and learning is more built on experiences in life and will be part of your memories for a longer period of time.
